GIG - FiX on Saturday, Nov. 21st [update 11.3.09]
I am very excited to have been asked to play FiX this month. I am equally excited about the lineup. I'll be playing in between two of my favorite DJs in SF, Scottino and Ron/e. The energy and quality of their music is always top-notch. The lineup should provide a musical energy and flow through the night that will keep you glued to the dance floor. Well, hello. Welcome. A few important notes to get started. (1) This is a new site. It's not fancy, but it works. I'm busy. Got lots to do. No time to create and maintain a pretty, glossy site. (2) I used to only play breaks under "Spivak." I now play breaks and house (prog-electro-tech-funk) under "Spivak." When necessary, I'll clearly indicate which flavor in which I'll be indulging--e.g., on recorded mixes, during live gigs, etc. (3) Friends, music, and DJing are three important ingredients in my life. If you've know me for awhile, you know that I've been DJing for a long time, that I used to play out a fair amount for awhile, and that--because of grad school--I haven't played out in awhile. I've missed DJing a lot, so I'm on a quest to get myself back out "there" again. (4) To help with this pursuit, I've recorded two new sets. One mix highlights the prog-tech-electro-house that I (newly) play (under "Spivak"). The other mix highlights the breaks that I'm currently playing. I've packaged them together into a single two mix package--one called Bassanova (the house mix) and the other Bassanova Breaks (uh, the breaks mix). The mixes are listed immediately below. I hope you like 'em. If you do, maybe whisper the news around to others who might like the music too? Anyway, I hope to see you out "there" soon! Cheers!

NEW MIX : BASSANOVA [house mix - recorded 01/09]
No, this mix is not musically anything like bossa nova, the Brazilian style jazz popularized by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, amoung others. But just like bossa nova, I hope it inspires dancing. Bassanova is a mix of electro-tech-funk-house music. What?! I don't think I can provide a description that accurately portrays the style. A listen to the music will reveal all that needs to be known. All I can say is that the key ingredients are heavy basslines that move and twist, a touch of funk, and a generous amount of grit. Hope you like it!
NEW MIX : BASSANOVA BREAKS [breakbeat mix - recorded 07/09]
The breaks companion to the electro-prog house mix listed below. This set was inspired by a set I played live; a set that started during the day and ended at night. This influenced the track selection in that the second half is a bit harder and darker than the first half. As usual, basslines and energy are the heart of the music.
